Frequently Asked Questions

We have prepared the following FAQ based on the questions most frequently received by the Board of Governors and the Club’s professional staff. This page will be regularly updated to reflect additional inquiries. To submit a question, please use the form located at the bottom of this page.

  • This project is for every golfing Member today and in future generations. Golfers of all skill levels, including beginners, seasoned players, and juniors, will enjoy playing and bettering their game in these new facilities.

  • The Driving Range was created over a century ago and creates major safety concerns for our neighbors on Kercheval Avenue and Irvine Lane. The Short Course was created in the mid-1960s. Both facilities served our Members well for decades but no longer meet current needs, and do not live up to modern standards. In order to relieve the safety issues and modernize both facilities, updating them on their current footprint does not work.

  • Robert Trent Jones, Sr. (RTJ), played a significant role in golf course architecture from 1940 to the early 2000s, designing or redesigning over 500 golf courses. His designs and renovations are known to be extremely difficult, like our current Short Course. In the last 20 years, many clubs have eliminated RTJ’s design principles, restoring their courses to original architecture reminiscent of their “Golden Age,” including Oakland Hills CC, Inverness Club, Baltusrol GC, Southern Hills CC, The Country Club at Brookline, and Winged Foot GC.

  • Many of the great clubs were built in the 1890s and early 1900s. During that period, driving ranges were not heavily utilized, and practicing was less common. Over time, golf and practice became increasingly popular, but many clubs were landlocked without the ability to expand their footprint. At CCD, we are fortunate to sit on 220 acres of land; many historic clubs would love to have our options.

  • The perception that the current Short Course is ideal for juniors is largely a function of it being underutilized by the broader membership. In reality, the course presents a high level of difficulty, with features that can be discouraging for developing players. While the existing layout includes two par-4 holes, their removal is more than offset by the comprehensive modernization of the Driving Range, Short Course, and Short Game Area. Together, these enhancements will provide a far more effective and engaging environment for juniors and player development.

  • No. In the 2021 vote, Members declined to increase and extend the Long-Range Planning Fee for a broader future phase over 20+ years that included a new first-tee building, changes to dining areas, and several other unrelated elements. The October 2026 ballot initiative is focused solely on the Practice Facilities and Short Course.

  • In October 2025, the Phase III–Irrigation assessment was approved by Member vote. The assessment of $167 monthly for Active Golf Members begins in May 2026 and runs through April 2028.

If the proposed Practice Facilities and Short Course project is approved by Member vote in October 2026, the projected cost will be approximately $20 more per month over the irrigation assessment, and will run from May 2028 until June 2030.

  • While the Short Course may be used by Members in a variety of ways, the same standards of decorum expected throughout the Club will continue to apply and will be enforced.

  • From a golfer’s perspective, this project will give our Members one of the best practice, learning, and playing environments in the country. Members will have the ability to hit on grass six days a week for a majority of the season, versus the current three days a week, and the need for limited flight golf balls will be eliminated. Operationally, the Driving Range stalls will be moved to fresh grass on busy days for those hitting later in the day. The project will also relocate the Practice Facilities into the same area, making usage much easier and more convenient. It will also include fairway bunker practice, a crucial feature for navigating the Championship Course, which we currently lack.

From an infrastructure standpoint, this project aims to modernize all our golf facilities by installing irrigation and drainage systems. Currently, these systems are either beyond their useful life or completely absent. By addressing these issues, the project ensures that the membership and the Club can continue to enjoy and utilize their golfing facilities for years to come.

  • By the time of the vote in October, the Board will have conducted seven focus groups and a Town Hall meeting.
